Do you buy every e-book or new report out just to get the insider secrets on how to learn e-commerce marketing and Internet marketing? Are you going broke just trying to find the answers? You don’t have to. In fact, there are many free and adequate resources out there on the web that will tell you everything that you need to know and you don’t have to go broke trying to find them!

A year ago, I was new to the idea of doing business online and because of my in-experience I was naive enough to take out my card and spend several thousands on a single package from an internet marketing company at one of their brainwashing sessions. I did this all before having a really good look at what else was available to me.

I attended another session at the same company a year later and, as I sat there, I witnessed reenactments of my own mistake through other people eagerly taking out their credit cards to purchase learning packages ranging from $2,000 up to $5,000 at the end of the seminar.

Please don’t let this happen to yourself. Don’t get me wrong, not all of the people who bought these packages made a mistake. For some, it has proved to be an effective investment of their money, while others may not have received any results at all. My point here is that, if you are a beginner, explore your options and learn as much as you can for free before handing over that card and signing your hard-earned money away.

What I didn’t know and what I want you to know, is that there are a lot of free or cheaper ways to find resources and start learning Internet marketing, so lets take a look at some of the options that you have.

Free E-books, Articles, Podcasts And Radio Shows

There are literally thousands of free e-books and articles all over the web that you can read or download. Article directories are a great place to start and you will find that most of them are filled with useful and informative information designed to educate the reader rather than be filled with worthless advertising information. This is because article directories have strict guidelines set out for those who submit the articles and they must be filled with useful content for the reader.

In the articles that you read, you can also click on the authors back link in the authors resource box and be transferred to the website of the author to find out even more information. Article directories will provide you with very basic knowledge on just about any topic including Internet marketing or e-commerce marketing, providing you with a launch pad to learn more on. All of this is free to you.

Podcasts and radio shows are also a great way to learn about topics of interest. Podcasts are much the same as radio shows although you have the option to subscribe to them, and receive information automatically using software that can read the feed formats such as RSS or Atom. Information from a podcast can be saved, or even downloaded for later and played on your mobile, ipod, mp3 player or on your PC.

Most subscriptions are updated frequently for new information, and best of all they are mostly free. Websites offering podcasts have a small icon that is orange with audio lines through it. By clicking on this icon you can subscribe to that site and receive information as it is made available.

Google It

You can also find plenty of resources by doing a search on Google for Internet marketing information. BUT keep in mind that you are surfing for information, not to purchase anything, so keep your cards in your wallet for now. Don’t be too worried if you come across ‘limited time, once time only’ offers or products and services that are at rock bottom prices. Keep focused on finding the good materials out there.

Forums

Forums are one of the best ways for beginners to find out helpful, free information on e-commerce marketing and Internet marketing. The good forums are free of corny sales pitches. The information provided on forums is mostly for readers, not shoppers. Forums often have ’stickies’ that compile all of the information and posts into a single thread that you can go through. This makes forums even more attractive as you don’t have to search for them.

One of the best forums that I have encountered is http://www.highrankings.com/forum. This forum is frequented by a host of Internet experts in the industry. The forum itself is owned by an SEO company that has been around since 1995. The only problem that you may encounter is that the threads or posts are often filled with SEO jargon, so make sure to check out the stickies that we mentioned earlier first. This site also offers an Advisor newsletter that is very informative. You can also see their archives for information from previous publications.

Blogs

Blogs are another great way to learn things from other Internet marketers. You will find that most Blogs are written by people much the same as yourself and are willing to help you along, giving you tips they have found in their travels. Blogs are a great way to learn from other people’s mistakes and get free info and resources other people have found helpful.

PPC Advertising – Take A Walk In The Park Before Entering The Jungle!

Pay per click advertising is an effective way to get your advertising message across, but before you get too excited and start using PPC ads from Google Adwords and Yahoo, start small. There are great PPC networks such as 7search.com or http://knnoodle.com that are much cheaper and will provide you the experience you need to start off. We all make mistakes and these smaller, cheaper PPC networks are a great way learn without spending too much money and to test the effectiveness of your campaigns before moving onto the big players such as Google or Yahoo.

Affiliate Marketing

If you are just beginning, the best and cheapest way to start your Internet marketing business is to sell affiliate products first. Most affiliate programs offer their affiliates resources such as pre-made ads for your PPC campaigns, solid sales and landing pages for your visitors to go to, photos of the products you are selling, follow up emails that are sent out to your customers and much more. By joining an affiliate program that has these tools already in place, you will have an insight into what an effective Internet marketing campaign looks like.

By using an affiliate program, you also have the added advantage of having a ready-made product just waiting for you to start marketing. All affiliate marketing programs are not created equally, so don’t just sign up for the first thing that comes along, make sure that careful consideration goes into the products that you choose to market.

Your internet business depends on the products that you choose. If you don’t find products that are in demand or competitively priced, people won’t buy them and you will not learn anything from this simply because you will not be able to track your results and measure how effective your efforts have been.

You can choose to spend your money and buy one of those expensive packages. By doing this, you may save yourself a lot of time searching for information or you can use the tips provided in my article and spend a little more time doing it. The choice is yours, just as long as you know all of the options that are available to you. Once you start with Internet marketing, remember that you will need to invest both time and money to make your business successful.

Despite what the hype and ads stating how easy it is now, an Internet business is just that, it is a business and needs to be taken just as seriously as a brick and mortar business. It is not a walk in the park, it is hard work and will take a lot of perseverance and patience to get it just right. But when you do, you will reap the rewards.

Radio instills loyalty in its listeners. This is a valuable quality that can be successfully and profitably utilized by direct marketing professionals, yet they seem to have a negative image of the radio as an effective direct response medium.

The general consensus is that radio does not elicit ‘instant income’ responses that are as high as other direct marketing media. Upon closer inspection, however, you will come to find that the prospects who make the effort to respond to your radio ads tend to be highly qualified. They have taken the effort to understand what they heard about your product, made note of your phone number, and called. In reality, you have a prospect here who can be easily converted into a paying customer. In fact, research proves out that leads generated via radio advertisements can be as much as 50% higher than DRTV.

So how can you use the radio ad in your system process to create more leads for your direct marketing campaign? Before we answer that, don’t forget that the ‘Buy Now’ refrain doesn’t work very well with radio listeners. Because they can’t see your product or income plan, they are not ready to buy it 60 seconds after they first hear of it. They want to know more. So be ready to give them product demonstrations, and don’t expect them to have their credit card ready when they call you.

If you use radio as a lead generator for your direct marketing campaign, you can create a variety of offers that will pull genuine responses from your radio advertising. For example you might ask the audience to call in for a free information kit or a demonstration.

To move them to action, try subtle direct marketing techniques such as an exclusive offer only for radio listeners. It might be a discount or a free trial. It always helps to use the line “if you call now.”

Back up your radio direct response advertisement with a sales team that is well-versed in converting a caller into a customer. So long as you are able to provide the callers with sufficient information about your product or service, respond effectively all their questions, and clear their doubts, you will realize that the radio audience has a high conversion rate.

So long as your product doesn’t require a visual demonstration to explain its benefits, radio advertising is a fantastic companion technique to generate leads and boost your direct marketing campaign.

As early as the 1970s it was not uncommon to hear radio advertisements that simply mentioned a product or brand name and suggested consumers consider the purchase of a new model. Very little creativity, just the mention of the name. It worked.

Radio stations at that time felt that having a radio signal was a license to print money. Businesses flocked to radio and other forms of media to capture the market in advertising. It worked.

Fast-forward to the 21st century and you’ll find that era is no more. Radio is rarely afforded easy advertising dollars and marketing is about more than name alone. Brand loyalty is almost non-existent. It’s all about, “What have you done for me lately?” If the answer is, “Not much,” you can expect former customers to use their internal GPS to locate new and greener pastures. Marketing strategies need to be reevaluated.

The mere mention of a brand name may draw a “So what” expression from most consumers. There are those flavor of the month brands that draw some buzz, but most businesses are finding they need to replace models quickly and dream faster than their customers who get bored with the latest device or product.

No, it may not be fair. Yes, it might have been easier to simply choose a brand and stick with it, but that’s not the way the game is played in this new millennium. What to do?

Well, you could lament this unfair dynamic or you can learn an entirely new set of rules when it comes to Internet marketing.

Advertising choices are no longer simply those associated with traditional media. Business has the opportunity to consider a variety of online media advertising solutions.

Consumers demand that businesses go out of their way to earn business. Services who use an online environment often bid for the right to provide service. The idea of monopoly in business is virtually non-existent. Is it sensible to sit at the local coffee shop and lament the passing of good old days or does it make more sense to get back in the ring and go a full fifteen rounds? This is a fight for your future, a fight for your business – and it’s a fight you can win.

Mentioning your product name is not enough to instill trust and product acceptance. You need to go the extra mile. Create an environment that teaches the consumer why they need your product. Provide content that helps them learn how to use it. Give them additional content that allows them to envision what life would be like if they choose to use your product. Make purchase convenient. Insist on exceptional customer service. Do more than you have to and make that your personal gold standard in business.

In some ways the business environment in this century is harder than it’s ever been, yet in an online environment you open your business up to more potential consumers than you can imagine. Your extra work in marketing is simply a profound investment in enormous success. In almost every case you can imagine it is exceptional marketing online that spurs exceptional sales growth.

In my nearly twenty years in the publicity industry, I have seen a fair bit of evolution in how the media reaches their audience. Some newspapers and magazines have turned into websites or blogs and several television shows have turned into streaming videos on YouTube. Talk radio seems to be the only media outlet that has remained untouched, right?

Wrong!

If we use the 1990’s as a reference point (and all of you radio pros from that era will back me up on this) the landscape of talk radio has most definitely changed from then until now. In the 90’s the average time allotted for a guest interview was anywhere from 45 to 60 minutes and most of the interviews took place in-studio.

Today if you want to find a 45 to 60 minute interview you have to focus on smaller markets (and/or smaller stations in big markets). Why? It all comes down to format. Today, the format for guest interviews in top markets can be as short as 3 to 5 minutes and as long as 10-15 minutes.

So the same major market talk show that used to have one guest per hour will now how 3-5 guests in one hour!

Also, say goodbye to in-studio interviews. Most hosts today don’t want guests coming to the studio. Now with shorter interviews, having to meet and greet an in-studio guest can be an unnecessary distraction, not only for the hosts but for other employees at the station as well.

And, where quality of sound used to be a factor, we’ve seen enough technological advances in equipment that phone interviews now sound far superior to those of the earlier days.

Ok, so things have changed. But it isn’t necessarily for the worst. Any opportunity to be a guest on a radio show is an opportunity you want to take advantage of – regardless of the amount of airtime, the size of the market or the power of the radio station!

For years I have told my clients about the power of radio, and have watched many campaigns produce fantastic results. Here are just a few helpful tips I share with my clients about the value of talk radio and how to maximize these opportunities to connect with their audience.

Work With However Many Minutes You Have on the Air!

Be careful not to fall into the negative mindset about short interviews. Even if your interview only lasts say 10 minutes, these are 10 very valuable minutes of airtime, just learn how to maximize it!

* Develop those Sound Bites. If you only have 10 minutes to talk about your book, product or service you just need to develop your message so that it’s concise and will grab the audience’s attention. The secret for doing this is to make every word count in being able to communicate your message.

* Know Your Message and Stay On it. Figure out what your key message is and stick with it! You don’t have time to be thrown off topic by the host or caller. When that happens, your job is to briefly acknowledge what was said and bring the conversation back to your message. It can be done as politely as, “yes that’s a good point, but”(the rest of your answer would be your message). This kind of response allows you to keep your manners in so that the host doesn’t feel like you’ve ignored his comment, but at the same time, you’re in control of the communication and able to get your point across.

* Know the Host and the Show. If the show is simulcast on the internet, take the time to listen to it before your interview. This will allow you to get a feel for the overall tone of the show and host and how he or she communicates with guests and callers. It will also give you a feel for the pace of the show. Then when it comes time for your interview, you’ll know what’s expected of you as a guest and you’ll be able to stay in stride. I promise you, the host will appreciate that you’re keeping the same pace and tone as he or she is! The benefit to you? The more the host likes you the more inclined they will be to promote your book, product or service for you!

Bottom line? Advertisers pay hundreds of dollars for a single minute of time on the air. So, a 10 minute interview is very valuable and can be worth thousands of dollars in advertising time!

Only Want a Long Interview? Ditch the Major Markets!

If you only want longer interviews, then look to smaller markets. If you are not sold on the benefits of these seemingly lesser markets, let me share some terrific facts about these rough diamonds:

*Get Your Feet Wet: Interviews in smaller markets give you the opportunity to gain experience as a radio guest providing terrific insight as to the workings and rhythm of talk radio.

* Fine Tune: Knowing your message and knowing the right way to communicate it are two different things. These interviews allow you to test your messages and identify which ones resonate best with the host and listeners.

* Question Time: As a standard rule in talk radio, you always want to provide hosts with sample questions to ask you as the host won’t always have the time or discipline to study your topic prior to speaking with you. But, after doing a number of small market interviews you’ll know which questions present the best opportunity for communicating your message and keeping listeners tuned into the show!

* ….and a higher concentration of listeners!

Yes, it’s true. In smaller markets, there just aren’t as many stations to choose from as in the larger markets. So, what’s the benefit of this for you? Well, simply put, less choice of stations means listeners aren’t able to do as much channel surfing. Think about it: in Gainesville, Florida there are 3 stations that have a talk show format whereas in San Francisco, California there are 10. So even though the population in Gainesville is minute compared to the population of SF – it’s very feasible to have a larger audience listening to your interview in Gainesville, than the one you conduct in San Francisco. It’s the channel surfing factor at play.

In smaller markets listeners have less choice of talk stations to listen to and so they tend to have favorite stations and hosts they often view as a trusted advisor or friend. So being on a small market show with dedicated listeners and a host who endorses your book, product or service, can be far more impacting on your sales.

Not In-studio? Not a Problem!

With in-studio interviews you have to:

* Schedule time off from work;

* Be away from your family;

* Spend time and money on travel (planes, trains and automobiles…remember?)

* Incur cost of hotels and meals while on the road.

And what if you arrive at the station and there’s hot, late breaking news and the show cancels or the interview goes short? Yikes! There goes your time and money down the drain. What a waste!

Radio phone interviews are so much more beneficial for you. Travelling isn’t necessary! Time of day is no longer an issue. For example, if you have an interview on a popular overnight show, you can still do it, but from the comfort of your bed! Just imagine, talking to people all over the country while lounging in your pajamas!

And what about those interviews during office hours? Are you a busy executive? You can integrate radio phone interviews into your work-day, around client meetings, staff briefings or in-between those important reports you’re on deadline to get done. You can even coordinate radio interviews when you’re traveling on business. We’ve had clients conduct live interviews from airports and even abroad on an overseas business trip!

Yes, in-studio interviews are great for establishing camaraderie between you and the host but that same camaraderie can be created with phone interviews. It just requires that you become more adept at your communication skills so that your ability to have a quality communication isn’t hindered simply because the person isn’t sitting in front of you!

The Take Away…

Even though the face of radio has changed, in many ways it has leaned toward your advantage. By using these tips, you can take make the most of the fantastic exposure that this medium can provide.
